"Both Karen and Jo-Anne are excellent networkers and have connected me to resources that have been instrumental in being able to provide services to my clients. From my full and grateful heart, I sing the praises of DDNI and highly recommend joining us in this sacred death doula space." - Jennifer Blalock, Death Doula Cincinnati, OH, USA
An exploration of the profound, interconnected experiences that shape human lives, highlighting the complexities and challenges that people face, including mental health issues like suicide, the struggles associated with chronic illness, and the transformative journey of organ transplant. Each of these areas touches on universal themes of survival, loss, hope, and resilience. The term "Threads of Humanity" evokes the idea of interconnectedness, where individual stories weave together to reveal the shared struggles and triumphs of the human condition.
What you will experience:
- Two interactive sessions with each "human book" to "hear" their deeply emotional, educational, and thought-provoking stories.
- Small engaging group discussions with each "human book" to ask questions, and openly discuss participant reactions and thoughts to deepen understanding and awareness of these lived experiences.
- Explore the universal nature of human struggles, emphasizing that despite differences, experiences like pain, loss, and the hope of healing are shared across cultures, ages, and backgrounds.
-All shared within a safe, non-judgemental space where storytellers and participants can engage in respectful dialogue that allows us to challenge assumptions, confront stereotypes, in a personal and transformative way.
Our Storytellers will share two very different and unique life experiences - one is about mental health and suicide, and the other is about chronic illness, caregiving, and organ transplant. Although they may seem extremely different, each one touches on the universal themes of survival, loss, hope, and resilience.

Shirley Grant is a daughter, sister, Aunt, wife, mother, and grandmother is a Death Doula, Care Aide, and an End of Life Care Companion/Coach. She's taught End of Life Care workshops since before she even knew Death Doulas existed. She has always been comfortable holding sacred space with/for clients, family, and friends ... but no degree of comfort with death and dying could possibly prepare her (or anyone else) for that phone call... or ... “the writing on the wall”.
An excerpt from Shirley's story: "Christy’s final thoughts...scrolled within reach before her final breath...love, apologies, and lists of her favourite things and whom she’d like to leave them with ... I was told that she had written on the walls around her. How does a mother survive the agony of losing her daughter to suicide? Is it even doable? there is no way to avoid reality…when “the writing’s on the wall”
Karen has years of experience coaching in life, death, and all the messy in-between. Yet as a death doula and educator, she was never fully prepared for the role of caregiver for her husband when he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, nor his miracle double lung transplant 10 years later. Going far beyond the practicalities of caregiving and the true miracle of organ transplant, Karen shines a light on the emotional and spiritual wreckage that occurs along the journey, and yet no one wants to talk about it.

"Taking this workshop was invaluable, personally and professionally to compliment my studies in End Of Life Planning ... Grateful for this heart centred community and the leadership and teachings offered by Karen and Jo-Anne
Dying With Dignity Canada was recently joined by Jo-Anne Haun and Karen Hendrickson, DWDC volunteers and Founders of the Death Doula Network International. During this session, they discussed the importance of Advance Care Planning, and shared their wisdom and guidance on how to begin the conversation on end-of-life planning with those you love.
"So much more info and resources than the Doula course!!! Lovely to chat with others too and have a sense of community it would take us all a lot of trial and error to get the info you gave us resources too."
" Jo-Anne and Karen have created an amazing tool with the DDNBC. There are invaluable resources, talks with the "experts", great community and access to them and their experiences. Perfect for death doulas, aspiring or active and to those experiencing grief or loss currently. Priceless! "
